TNSTC begins special service
Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has commenced operation of special bus service from Tirupur to various destinations in the State on Wednesday to ease the passenger congestion during Pongal.
The TNSTC General Manager (Tirupur region), K. Selvaraju, told The Hindu that the special service would continue till the early hours of Sunday. About 150 buses regrouped from depots at Palani, Kangeyam, Dharapuram, Tirupur, Palladam and Udumalpet, all falling under Tirupur region, had been pressed into service to ensure that 300 trips were made every day from Tirupur city.
Mr. Selvaraju said that buses heading towards Madurai, Theni, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Chennai, Salem and Nagercoil were being operated from the Old Bus Stand, while the services to Tiruchy and Karur areas were run from the New Bus Stand.
A special team under the Deputy Commercial Manager of TNSTC had been formed to ensure timely operation of special services from the two bus stands.
Meanwhile, police had beefed up security at both the bus stations to prevent chain-snatching, eve-teasing and-pick pocketing.
Policemen in mufti had also been put at places across the city where the congregation of people were more during the festival.
