New buses from TNSTC in 2010 – Part 4 (TNSTC-MDU)

TNSTC-MDU operates buses mostly in the south TN. It has the most number of fleets than any other TNSTCs. In 2010(till date) Madurai city added around 250 JNNURM buses. The old SLFs that were running in the madurai city were transferred to different regions of TNSTC-MDU i.e., MDU, VNR, Nellai, DGL and NGL. Those SLFs were modified for intercity routes with 3X2 seats.

I spotted the first modified SLF in MDU-CBE route. Personally used that SLF 3 or 4 times. It charges Rs.15 more than the the other buses running in MDU-CBE route. But this guy covered the distance in 4 hrs. In later point of time it took 30 minutes more.

These modified SLFs were operated in many routes like MDU-Cumbum, MDU-Palani, MDU-DGL, MDU-Sengottai, MDU-Tuty, MDU-NGL, MDU-Marthandam, MDU-Nellai etc.,

Now lets come to the new buses. TNSTC-MDU Madurai region added new buses mainly from JNNURM. This JNNURM was partly funded by central and state govts. These JNNURM buses were for madurai city. But few buses were given to DGL region initially, later they were reverted back to MDU region itself. JNNURM buses were SLF buses from both AL and TATA. TATA buses were marcopolo built from their dharwad unit where as AL SLFs were Irizar TVS built. Coimbatore and Chennai got JNNURM buses built from Irizar, Prakash, G.S, Veera Vahana etc., But for Madurai it was a single body builder. JNNURM buses at madurai were branded as “vaigai ratham”.

Some of the JNNURM buses are.,
TATA Marcopolos:

From Leyland:

Madurai region buses started the registration nos from TN58 N 1433 and the latest was a yellow marco with reg no TN58 N 1806. Very few mofussil buses were added to MDU region. To my suprise i havent seen even a single new AL moffusil bus from MDU region. Where as other regions didnt add any TATA bus. 🙂

Dindugal Region was one of the major share holder to get the old SLFs running in madurai. It got few JNNURM SLFs initially. Later they were given back to madurai region itself.

Virudhunagar Region was the first region in TNSTC-MDU to start running the new mofussil buses without any formal inauguration. Registration nos started with TN67 N 06XX and the latest i saw was around 065X

Nellai and Nagarkovil region added the new moffusil buses with same design and livery. They look very similar and the only difference is their registration nos.

Note: Will try to update the post with more Pics soon.

  3. What I feel Both tenkasi and shencottah are very near towns and courtallam also. The moffusil busses are from shencottah to all other tamil nadu town and cities via courtallam and tenkasi while the season time and non-seasonal time the buses straight away to tenkasi via ilanji to save the time. Then the moffusil buses all starting from shencottah is the right way as per mr.meenakshisundaram statment.

  6. Let us make world class service and learn from our neighbouring states who are making profitable business in State run Transport corporation. Our public in Tamilnadu rely on mostly buses. hence we will have good business. At the same time let our Transport corporation concern about our passengers safety, comfort and their staff safety and comfort also.
Advance Kudos to achieve this feat.

    • Central govt didnt add any new cities in JNNURM list. Moreover we didnt heard any new schemes funded by JNNURM. Even funding for new buses also didnt happened recently.
